Book:The Help
Author:Kathryn Stockett
Pages:1-35
I have recently started reading the novel The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I have yet to see the movie created from this novel. From what ive heard, the movie was amazing. I decided i wanted to read the book before i watched the movie, which is not normally the way I do it. To the point ive read to in this novel, ive learned that the black people are called The help, they work for the rich white people. The white people arent very nice. They want to have seperate bathrooms made so they dont need to use the same ones as the help. So far in this novel, ive been introduced to several characters.Aibileen was first. This lady is part of the help. She works for Miss Leefolt. Aibileen's own boy passed away when he was 24 years old. She cares for Miss Leefolt's baby like it was her own. She cooks and cleans and does whatever Miss Leefolt tells her to do. She is very loyal. She has a friend named Minny. Minny is also from the help. She works for Miss Walter. She is more stubborn and talks back to her boss. Miss Walter has a daughter named Miss Hilly. Miss Hilly has been telling lies about Minny and convinced Miss Walter to fire her. For a while after that, Minny couldnt find work anywhere. Miss Hilly already had the chance to get the word around. There was also a lady named Celia Rae Foote. She married Miss Hilly's ex boyfriend therefore the other white ladies didnt like her very much. They talked about her behind her back. She ended up hiring Minny. So now Minny is working for Celia. So far thats what ive read in The help. Something that really stood out to me in this novel is the language. Mostly the way the help speak. They dont have very good english and i think that really adds to the novel itself because you can kind of feel like you are hearing them talk that way. A prediction i have is i think Celia is going to help Minny maybe a little more then expected. I think Minny is going into this thinking shes going to be helping her but might get something more out of it. A question i have is, Why was the white and black ever seperated like this? It doesnt make sense to me. This book started a little bit slow but its starting to pick up and i think its going to be a really good novel.
